Biography

Henry Jones is a leader in international and public sector finance, corporate governance, and pension fund management. He has more than 40 years experience in business oversight, public and private investment funds, bond sales and purchasing and portfolio and pension fund management in complex and highly regulated investor environments.

As the immediate past president and member of the CalPERS Board of Administration, Henry served on the largest public pension fund in the United States for 14 years. Having been elected to the board three times by hundreds of thousands of California retirees and elected both president and vice president of the Board by his peers, during Henry’s tenure the CalPERS fund grew by nearly $337 billion from its low of $164 billion at the bottom of the financial crisis in 2009 to nearly $500 billion at the end of calendar year 2021. While on the CalPERS Board, Henry also served on the boards of the International Corporate Governance Network, the Pacific Pension Institute and the Robert Toigo Foundation, organizations dedicated to corporate governance, investor stewardship and sustainable economies; asset allocation, risk management and responsible investing; and, fostering education and career advancement among unrepresented talent in the financial industry, respectively.

Prior to joining the CalPERS Board, Henry served as a Business Development Executive with IBM Business Consulting Services and as a Principal Consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers where he provided strategic advising on management and governance practices, organizational structure, financial and operational processes (both instructional and noninstructional) for school districts, state departments of education and city and county governments.

Henry’s reputation as a prudent and skilled financial manager was honed when he served as the Chief Financial
Officer to the second largest school district in the United States, the Los Angeles Unified School District, overseeing a $7 billion budget, following his tenures there as Budget Director and Deputy Budget Director. Henry’s vast experience in publicsector finance, pension investing, health and medical benefit cost containment, and collective bargaining led to him being appointed as the Treasurer for the National Council of Institutional Investors (over $1 Trillion invested during his tenure), the Chief Executive Officer of the Annuity Reserve Fund Board, Personnel Commissioner for the Los Angeles County College Board of Trustees and as a board member of the Los Angeles Schools Federal Credit Union.

Henry has taught as an associate professor of School Finance for the Graduate Education Program at California State University, Los Angeles, his alma mater; and, holds a certificate in Pension Fund Investing from the Institute for Fiduciary Education, University of California, Berkeley.
